Anonymous Asked: As a beginning artist, can you give me any tips?

oh man im relaly not good at this because i will probably telll you stuff youve already heard but all i can say is it really works

practice from real life, from photos, in person
in person is better because you learn better how to directly translate 3D to 2D and therefore can kinda retranslate backwards wow how do i make sense of what im trying to say…
uhh yeah photos help because its already a 3D thing being translated into 2D so it takes a bit of the work out, but there’s no harm in using it

bIG TO SMALL
FOREST BEFORE TREES
not just when sketching oout what youre doing but with like EVERYTHING
get the whole of the idea, shape, etc, before you focus on the little things

also dont stress yourself over a “style” in the beginning stage okay. a style will come naturally

dont feel too entitled or not good enough to trace or reproduce other artists’ works (but dont post them online or claim them as yours)
that’s a very important part of art too is FEELING out yourself in an artistic way what other artists are doing
also i’d suggest going to professional/wellknown artists for this (like da Vinci or Picasso, people like that, people that have a NAME) rather than just “tumblr user zombieskully” lmao because ppl like me havent proven their worth yet as an artist so im probably doing a lot of mistakes and you’d rather learn from someone who doesn’t make many (if any) mistakes than some amateur like me 8’)

figure out what you like that ppl are doing and try to figure out how to recreate what you like from them at the BASE LEVEL
like…if you like how I use color, don’t copy my color palettes, learn my method of color picking and work how to fit it to your needs

dont lock yourself in with one thing
and also dont force yourself to do something different than what’s coming naturally
if you like linear things but find out you’re better with tonal or color, dont fight it, same with vice versa. some people arent cut out for “seeing” in that kinda way and that’s okay because with art, there’s always a way to make it work 8)

think of art as its own universe too
dont think “wow i can only do lines that are clean” or “its only good art if it looks EXACTLY like how i see it (photorealism)” because thats not what art is about
art is finding what you see in yourself (lmao deep) but like what i mean is art is about projecting an image that’s about yourself through your medium (whatever that may be)
so not only am i drawing things from my POV, im drawing them through how i feel about what im drawing, how i smell it, taste it, just ALL OF ME
the subject im drawing is the mirror to which im projecting how that subject means and seems to me as an artist

art is a multitude of languages, but which one, the dialect, and accent is up to you 8)
